Happy Hump Day WWRS!! You know I hate to leave the house after I have taken my bra off and put on my house dress. There are however two things that will make me throw on some Uggs and a sweater and venture out into the streets. 1. Coffee Creamer 2. Wine When I lived in DC I had a wine club that delivered but, Mississippi doesn't allow alcohol to be delivered. So I am just out there with the people looking crazy as hell. The other night I was trying not to leave the house but, I was out of wine. I needed wine to process the shit I had to do for the night. Some things just go smoother with wine. Quote me on that! So as I ventured out to get my wine the clerk in the store wanted to hold a conversation. Sir I am out here riding dirty with no draws and no bra. Anyway he proceeded to tell me how many times the state of MS taxes alcohol and how ridiculous it is. I mean seriously I am gonna buy it no matter how much tax is on cuz I need it in my life. Especially since it's been cold enough for me to put a fire in the fireplace. I am out here being straight grown burning shit and drinking wine. No seriously this a part of living my best life.
I was scrolling through IG and FB and seeing all the people with Christmas decorations. Listen, after my child was too old for me to be Santa Claus and she got her own car and stuff I was done with all that tree decorating etc. Every year I see all these live trees and think oh maybe I will get a little tree then I realize that I am going to have to take it down and get rid of it after Christmas and I turn into the Grinch. Forget all that! I know people who have been waiting to decorate since Halloween. Not me! I was thinking back on the times when my daughter was smaller and I would have to struggle to buy her presents. It made think a lot about what some of WWRS have to do when we have kids. I was a single mother and I always had to think about what I needed to do for my child in the midst of running a whole organization. Just because you are the CEO, VP or Executive Director doesn't mean you get a day off from being Mommy to some little humans. I have read a few books and articles about work life balance. But, really what is that? I have to be superwoman! I mean I am up early trying to make sure my kids gets to school. Then I have to deal with a bunch of people all day. When I get home that child doesn't care about your title they want their mommy. That is where so many of us live. Listen Sis! sometimes you just gotta take care of yourself and your family. I mean if you fall out dead on that job at 5:00 pm trust they will have someone in that job before your casket is six feet deep. So you need to make sure that while you are being Mommy, model employee a lady in the streets and a freak in a bed that you are taking care of you. I worked myself to the point of sickness and I promise you I don't have nothing to show for it. Let me say this again...If you gonna work yourself to death die owning your own shit. Work your fingers to the bone for your legacy and family. Sisters we have to start thinking about our health. We must advocate for ourselves and those who are in our lives.
I was watching a video about a young woman in Brooklyn who was having her second baby and she was using a Doula. She was traumatized from having a c-section with her first child. As I was watching the Doula work with her I began to think about how all throughout history people always had a woman who was good helping other women birth babies. I remember hearing about Serena Williams having complications during the birth of her daughter. I keep trying to figure out how black women in particular can be under the care of a doctor and still end up dead. When you look at the poorer communities you still see high infant mortality rates among black and brown folks. We are still dying and being damaged having babies in 2018. How is this possible??!! I am not saying every woman should use a Doula but, you should feel good about the care you are getting. If you feel like the health care provider isn't listening to you Sis you owe it to yourself to find another provider. Our physical health is so important. I see so many younger women get frustrated and end up sicker with something that at the time could be a simple fix, But, it has become worse because it has gone unchecked. We deserve to get excellent healthcare! So Sis take your mental health days, your sick days and your vacation. Take the days even if you don't travel. You need to rest. We deserve to be well. We deserve to rest. Coming up in 2019 I am going to feature some amazing WWRS on this blog. I believe you will be blessed by their words. I am all in with this blogging thing. Take care of yourself ladies. Take your vitamins, drink yo green juice and rest. The world needs what you have to give but they can't get it if you are not healthy enough to release it. Be Well!
